This walk begins from beside the Oratory in the town centre square, and will proceed along Bothair Mor to the Boreen by Tullyvarraga Hill and then along Sli na Mara to Hastings House, returning to the town centre . Among the topics to be explored will be the ancient landscape on which the town now rests, the population of the area and their houses in the 1800’s, the castle at Smithstown, the old place names and the story of Hastings House and its part in the War of Independence.
The event will be presented by John O Brien of the Shannon Archaeological and Historical Society.
